Welcome to Within Range
Better decisions begin before the shot.
Within Range is a New Zealand hunting project. The capability of a rifle and cartridge is not the same as a hunter's demonstrated ability in the position and conditions they face on the day.
Why it exists
Ballistic figures describe the projectile. They say nothing about the hunter, the rifle in your hands, the position you are in, the wind, the distance or the uncertainty of being in the field.
Within Range asks a different question: is this shot inside the ability you have demonstrated, in conditions close to these? Sometimes the answer is a better position, less uncertainty, a shorter distance or no shot at all.
What the tools do
The calculator combines published cartridge ballistics with your own position-matched group size and the conditions you enter. It estimates placement confidence inside a simplified circular vital-zone proxy at each distance. The Practice area records comparable groups, so your inputs come from your own shooting instead of a generic claim about the cartridge.
The result is a model under stated assumptions. It is not a guarantee, a declaration that a shot is ethical, or a complete estimate of a humane outcome. The model does not fully capture projectile behaviour, animal presentation, recovery probability or several sources of field uncertainty. Those limits are shown with the result, not buried under it.
What a useful result looks like
A useful result might show where you need more practice, where a steadier position would change the answer, or where the uncertainty is too high to model usefully. Respect for the animal means making that decision before pressure and excitement take over.
Who's behind Within Range
I'm Tim. I live in the Waikato with my young family and our loyal dog. I grew up around hunting, spent thirteen years away from it, and came back with more respect for the skill, fitness and judgement the New Zealand bush asks of us. Becoming a father made me think harder about which habits are worth passing on.
I currently work in IT, and I have a background in strength and conditioning and coaching. Both have taught me to define what I am trying to measure, test it honestly and be clear about the limits of the result. Within Range applies the same approach: use the best evidence available and say plainly what it cannot prove.
I am learning this craft, and nowhere near mastering it. I have no interest in pretending otherwise. I keep buying books on ballistics, hunting and fieldcraft, though I might need another shelf soon. What I want is to put more into hunting than I take out of it, and I hope Within Range is one way we can learn more together.
The project is still developing, and constructive corrections are welcome. I would rather explain where the model is weak than present a confident answer the evidence cannot support.
Your judgement remains essential. Within Range is a decision-support and practice tool, not legal or safety advice and not a substitute for training, field experience or choosing to close the distance.
